So sad. The innovative musician behind so many classic hits passed away on July 26 after suffering a heart attack in La Jolla, Calif.

JJ Cale, the smooth musician and songwriter behind hits like Eric Clapton’s “Cocaine” and “After Midnight,” died on July 26 after having a heart attack, according to the president of his management agency. JJ was 74 years old.

After suffering a heart attack, JJ was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., where he later died.

JJ Cale was loved by fans worldwide for his completely unpretentious and beautiful music,” said Mike Kappus, president of the Rosebud Agency. “He was loved even more dearly by all those he came in contact with as the most real and down-to-earth person we all knew.”

JJ is one of the most noteworthy players in the golden age of 1960s and 70s rock ‘n’ roll. He wrote songs that were popularized by Clapton, Lynard Skynard, The Allman Brothers, and countless more, and created what’s known as Tulsa Sound, a laid-back style contrasted with psychedelic rock.

But he was not only loved for his musical genius, but also for the person he was, Mike said: “He was incredibly humble and avoided the spotlight at all costs but will be missed by anyone touched by him directly or indirectly. Luckily, his music lives on.”

Eric Clapton likely wouldn’t be the legend he’s regarded as today without JJ Cale, and he recognized the passing of his friend on his Facebook page, saying, “We’ve lost a great artist and a great person.” Eric and JJ won a Grammy Award together in 2006 for their album, The Road to Escondido.

There are currently no plans set for JJ’s funeral, according to CNN.

We’ve lost a true legend. Our thoughts and prayers are with JJ’s family during this difficult time.
