Selena is making stars dance and critics cheer. Is there anything she can’t do?
Selena Gomez‘s first official solo album — bye, Scene! — is up for grabs today, giving fans 11 musical reasons to fall in love with the pop princess all over again. But honestly, Selena could release an 84-minute album of dying cat sounds and I’d still eat it up like a bowl of Frosted Flakes; so I decided to go to the critics to find out, objectively, what the word is on the street.
As it turns out, I’m not alone in my appreciation for Stars Dance!
Idolator
Despite flashes of monotony, Idolator recognizes a handful of “sharp moments” on the album, praising Selena’s ability to weave semi-seamlessly between genres:
There are still plenty of sharp moments. The title track is a brilliant swirling nugget and ‘B.E.A.T.’ is appealingly weird and slight, but ‘Come & Get It,’ with its hypnotic rhythm and nonsensical hook, begins to feel like the best thing here, and probably is. Mercifully, ‘Love Will Remember’ in its album version is spared the Justin Bieber voicemail opening that I found so stomach-turning in demo form, which makes the song probably her most heartrending since ‘Who Says.’

In an album full of gems, music blog MuuMuse takes particular delight in the title track:
If there's any outstanding highlight of Stars Dance, it's the album's namesake itself. ‘Stars Dance’ is where the production gets most interesting, coated in dramatic strings, gritty dubstep grinds, electronica blips and yelps in the distance that channel Emile Haynie's work with Lana Del Rey.

Comparing Stars Dance to having a piña colada “chucked at your head,” which is apparently a good thing, this Los Angeles Times review aptly notes that it’s a solid summer album:
The first sounds one hears on her sassy new album are an oxygen-sucking sub-bass, trap snares and a note to her fellow party nihilists that she only parties this hard on her birthday (and every day is her birthday). It’s almost as good as having shorts in every color.
