Ariel, was found dead just a little over one month after he pleaded guilty on July 27 to 937 criminal counts, including kidnapping, rape and attempted murder. He agreed to serve a life term of over 1,000 years in prison to avoid the death penalty.
When prison officials found Ariel around 9:20 p.m., he was taken to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where later he was pronounced dead.
Ariel was not on suicide watch, although he was in protective custody, which means he would get checked on every 30 minutes.
None of the kidnapped women have yet to speak out about Ariel’s death.
Ariel’s brother-in-law spoke to CNN and said his family is angry that they had to find out about his death through the media before the prison told them first.
“I cried for several reasons,” Juan Alicea said. “My first thoughts were if the girls knew. I am talking about the victims. I immediately thought of them and what is going through their minds. Maybe this was for the best. I don’t think they were ever going to find peace with him alive.”
