The five-time world champion skater wed her U.S. Coast Guard beau Clay Pell in a beautiful ceremony on Jan. 19 in Providence, R.I. Congrats to the happy couple!
Michelle Kwan, 32, is not only an Olympic medalist and nine-time U.S. national figure skating champion — she’s now a married woman! The former professional skater married Clay Pell, 31, who is director for strategic planning on the National Security staff at the White House.
The couple wed on Saturday, Jan. 19 at First Unitarian Church of Providence, R.I., according to People magazine. They married in front of 240 guests, including fellow Olympic champions Brian Boitano, Dick Button and Dorothy Hamill.
The groom, who is a JAG and Lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard, wore his full uniform for the ceremony, while the bride donned an ivory Vera Wang gown. Michelle cried while walking down the aisle with her father, Danny Kwan.
In 2002 at the Salt Lake City Winter Games, Michelle skated to “Fields of Gold” as her Olympic swan song, which earned her the bronze medal — and she incorporated that song into her wedding!
Michelle Kwan & Clay Pell’s Engagement
Michelle is now a senior advisor for public diplomacy and public affairs. In September, she revealed the strong connection she feels to her now-husband.
“I never was one who believed in love at first sight, but I have to admit it happened for us,” she told People. ”I felt there was a magnetic connection between us. I thought he was the one from the beginning.”
Congrats to the happy couple!
