After an unsuccessful surgery to help Grayson Clamp restore his hearing, his parents almost lost faith. With one last hope, they tried a brain procedure that had never been tested on children before — and the results were unbelievable.
Grayson Clamp, 3, has been deaf since birth, missing the cochlear nerves in his ears that allow him to process sound. His parents, Len and Nicole Clamp, had tried everything they could to repair his hearing, including a cochlear implant. Nothing seemed to be working — until one method worked a miracle.
Grayson Clamp Hears For The First Time
When a cochlear implant was unsuccessful and nothing else seemed to be working, Len and Nicole decided to try an operation that had never been tested on children in the United States before. Doctors tried an auditory brain stem implant, which implanted a microchip on Grayson’s brain, and it worked!
“It’s been phenomenal for us,” Len said, according to The Daily Mail. He and Nicole said Grayson’s face lit up when he heard his father’s voice for the first time.
Auditory Brain Stem Implants: A Miracle Procedure
The procedure that allowed Grayson to finally hear is similar to the cochlear implant that didn’t work, using electrical stimulation to stimulate the brain, hopefully resulting in the ability to hear. It has only been completed on about 1,000 people to date, typically resulting in the patient’s ability to hear noises, but not necessarily words.
As exciting as it is to see their son recognize sound, Nicole told WBTV of Charlotte, N.C., that she and Len are not entirely sure what Grayson is and isn’t able to process yet. She said:
We don’t know exactly what it’s like for him. We don’t know exactly what he hears. His brain is still trying organize itself to use sound.
Len and Nicole adopted Grayson from a foster home when he was just a newborn. What a miracle this family has been able to experience!
Isn’t Grayson’s story miraculously adorable, HollyMoms?
