Justin’s mother, Pattie Mallette still worries about her 19-year-old son, and in a new interview she admitted that her parenting style has had to change as he grows up.
While promoting her new book for teens, Nowhere But Up, Pattie Mallette talked about her experiences of raising her own teenage son, Justin Bieber, and all the controversy that has been surrounding his behavior lately. From being accused of speeding, to partying all hours of the evening, Pattie admitted to Today that Justin is definitely more of an adult now, and that she’s had to alter how she parents him because of it.
Justin Bieber’s Mom: ‘I Hope I’m Still A Big Voice In His Ear’
At 19, Justin has been in and out of the news for not only his music and his on-again, off-again relationship with Selena Gomez, but also for getting into a little trouble.
He was recently pulled over for speeding, he was booed at the Billboard Awards, and he reportedly got into a scuffle with a neighbor! So when his mother, Pattie, was asked about his recent behavior, she said that of course she still worries — as does any mother!
“Well, I think as parents we all worry about our kids, whether they’re going off to college, you know, whatever — whatever situation they’re in,” Pattie said on Today on July 8. “I think at a certain age, the parenting style changes. And, he’s always been such a strong-willed child, you know. I talk about that [in the book].”
However, mother does know best. So regardless of what his behavior is, his mom is always going to be a concerned, active voice in his life.
“I talk to Justin. I text him and I call him every day, as much as you can for an adult child that doesn't live with you,” Pattie said. “He knows what I think. We talk. It's stuff that obviously I can't share with the whole world, but we definitely talk. I hope I'm still a big voice in his ear.”
Pattie Mallette: ‘Everybody Wants To Sensationalize’ Justin Bieber
Pattie admitted to Newsday on July 3rd that she doesn’t cross the line when talking about Justin to the press.
“He wants me to continue to respect his boundaries and my relationship with him,” she said. The Bieber mom continued to explain:
Everybody has their own opinion and everybody wants to sensationalize everything. You have to sort of let them make some of their own decisions. Me, personally, I would love to be with him all the time and to be able to ground him and deal with his problems and do all of that stuff, but at some point the parenting style changes. I hope to still be a respected voice in his ear.
Well, Pattie — we hope you are, too! What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Should Pattie be trying to get more involved in Justin’s life, or should she let him make his own mistakes?
