Steamy hookups, wild revelations and one big shocking return! Can we come back to this motel next week?
I often find myself defending Teen Wolf to my non-viewing friends by saying things like, “Listen, I know it has ‘Teen’ in the title, but it’s not that angsty.” Then came the July 8 episode, in which Scott (Tyler Posey) and the rest of his pubescent pack were so overcome by their inner demons that that they all tried to kill themselves. So as cool and creepy as the episode was, my “it’s not that angsty” argument is hereby null and void.
Welcome To The ‘Motel California’
In what might have been the most irresponsible class trip ever, the gang checked into a sketchy motel — the references to “Hotel California” were anything but subtle — and those druid sacrifices we heard about last week began to take shape in the form of mass suicides.
(Even if I still have no idea what any of that even means.)
Lydia (Holland Roden) spearheaded the rescue mission with her still-unexplained intuition about dead and/or soon-to-be-dead people. And although we still have no idea what her real powers are, Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) concocted a fun little theory:
I didn’t mean that you’re trying to kill people. I’m just saying that, maybe, you’re somehow involved in getting people to kill themselves.
Hey, it’s worth thinking about!
And before Ethan (Charlie Carver) tried to cut himself to pieces with an electric saw, fans were treated to his long-awaited hookup with Danny (Keahu Kahuanui). It’s funny, Teen Wolf is often referred to as one of the gayest shows on TV, but it wasn’t until a quarter of the way through its third season that we actually saw any guy-on-guy action. Oh well, worth the wait!
Scott was the last werewolf to try to off himself, but an impassioned speech from Stiles managed to pull him back from the dark side. Of course, his redemption didn’t go off totally without a hitch. The class’ buss exploded, and Lydia saw a mysterious figure appear in the flames!
(Was it a druid? Was it Death? Don’t ask me!)
Beauty & The Bestiality
While the Beacon Hills High gang was busy fighting for their lives, Ms. Blake (Haley Webb) was busy playing doctor to a still-wounded — and still very shirtless — Derek (Tyler Hoechlin). The two of them have a very Beauty & The Beast thing going on, and I ain’t talking about the version with the singing/dancing silverware.
But here’s my question: Why did hooking up with Ms. Blake allow Derek to heal himself? Did she simply get his wolf-y blood pumping, or like every other character on this show, could she be unknowingly harboring a supernatural secret?
The Old Man Returns!
The final scene of the episode brought back a familiar — though highly unwelcome — face from Teen Wolf‘s past: Allison’s (Crystal Reed) grandfather! Her dad paid him a little visit to find out why one of the Argents killed themselves at the same motel back in the ’70s.
Well, more specifically, he wanted to know which Alpha bit the Argent who killed himself back in the ’70s. And that creepy little old man, with blood slowly dripping out of his creepy little nose, was more than happy to reveal his identity:
It was Deucalion (Gideon Emery)!
