The comedian might only be 5′ 2″, but he’s actually larger than life! Kevin takes his standup routine to the big screen with ‘Let Me Explain,’ and the movie is just as good as the real thing.

Started from the bottom now we’re here. That’s one of the underlying themes of Kevin Hart’s fake/real documentary movie, Let Me Explain, a (unsurprisingly) hilarious flick anchored by Kevin’s 2012 standup performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It’s a showcase that reinforces that Kevin is one of the funniest, most high energy comics of this generation, but Let Me Explain also has a poignant side that illustrates how far Kevin’s come, and how sweet it is to be at the top.

Kevin Hart Has Some Explaining To Do

Let Me Explain starts with a set up swanky party in NYC. Kevin takes a note from his show, The Real Husbands of Hollywood, with a clearly scripted scene that’s presented as real life. At the party everyone is telling Kevin that he’s sold out, that he’s no longer the guy who he used to be since coming into fame, and in possibly the funniest part of the movie, a stranger calls him a L.A.B. — a “local ass bitch.”

This prompts Kev to be all, “Wait, I have to explain, please let me,” and he decides there is no better place to do some ‘splaining than MSG. We’ll forgive the hokey setup that leads to Kevin’s sold out standup performance, because everything that follows is downright funny.

Kevin Hart’s Standup Has Fans Rolling On The Floor

From there Let Me Explain morphs into a standup special, like any you would see Louis C.K. or Dane Cook do. The difference has to be Kevin’s unstoppable energy. He literally has a pyrotechnic team shoot fire from the MSG stage throughout the show, a perfect reminder of how excitable he can be. He doesn’t skate on energy alone though — Kevin’s routine is a funny roller coaster ride bouncing from topics such as being single, being late for work, and Kanye West

But the meat of the routine is focused around his crumbling marriage — Kevin divorced from his wife in 2010 — and the humor he brings to things like getting caught cheating and the hysteria of a jealous girlfriend are spot-on and had the whole audience — at MSG and my movie theater — crying with laughter.

‘Let Me Explain’: Look How Far Kevin Hart’s Come

Back to the poignancy factor though. Kevin finishes his standup in tears of joy, saying how amazing it is that he’s made it this far, from putting small clips on YouTube to performing a sold out show at Madison Square Garden. It’s a surprising, touching moment that takes Let Me Explain way further than just a standup special featuring an energetic short guy.

That small bit of heart, along with an overflowing laughs, and the audacity Kevin had to bring a standup special to theaters, make Let Me Explain a ride worth taking.
