Kendrick’s character was put into question when he called out the names of rappers in a unprecedented way in his new song “Control” with Big Sean. But finally, the fierce young MC explained the meaning of his vicious verse.
Kendrick Lamar has finally explained his verse on Big Sean’s new song, “Control,” which was released on Aug. 12. The much-hyped rap seemed to imply that the 5’6″ rapper viewed himself as the best thing hip-hop has ever seen and that he is trying to murder his competition (figuratively of course) so fans won’t remember them. Yikes! But was the harsh rap nothing more than a little friendly fire?
Kendrick Lamar On Competition In Rap
Kendrick enthusiastically dished to Chelsea Handler on Chelsea Lately on Aug. 29 that despite how it sounded, the rappers he mentioned in the song are actually his friends. The rapper compared the competition between Kobe Bryant and LeBron James in basketball to the competition that goes on in the rap world.
“I’m sure they’re good friends off the court. But when you’re in that booth, you have to be able to annihilate whoever’s out there and that keeps the level of hip-hop alive, as far as the culture,” he said.
Which sounds pretty reasonable — basically K-Dot thinks that it’s okay to be competitive as long as it’s all in good fun.
Rappers Respond To Kendrick Lamar
Rappers have been less than amused by Kendrick’s egotistical lyrics though. Diddy responded to “Control” with a picture on Instagram of himself and Jay Z laughing and saying: “And Kendrick said, I’m the king of New York.” He went even further by posting to his 2 million followers: “Kendrick got ya'll n****s taking ya'll time now. What ya'll gonna do now. Haaaa lol lets go!"
On the other end of the spectrum, Wale was actually glad Kendrick mentioned him in the song. “I’d've been offended if my name wasn’t in that sh*t,” he said. “I still feel like I’m the best rapper on the planet.”
