Five years from now, we might look back on the summer of 2013 as one of the most revolutionary in pop history. Between Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and Justin Bieber, it was the summer that everyone grew up. But it was also a summer that stars like Katy Perry and Chris Brown took the next steps towards becoming music icons.
Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez & Justin Bieber: The Teens Grow Up
At first it looked like we’d remember the 2013 summer as the one where Selena cemented the maturation process she started by starring in the racy Spring Breakers. Not to say she didn’t do that — “Come & Get It” and “Slow Down” took her career to a new level and put her in a class with singers like Rihanna and Ciara.
It’s just that, as we were marveling over Selena’s growth, Miley came along and twerked us all into shock with “We Can’t Stop.” Now that’s an evolution. With lyrics like “It’s our party we can do what we want” and “If you’re not ready to go home, can I get a ‘Hell no?’” the former Hannah Montana star’s new, very-grown-up style took the pop world by storm.
She didn’t stop (no pun intended) there though. Joining Lil Twist and Justin Bieber, Miley and her two sexy co-stars dropped “Twerk,” this summer’s hottest collaboration, on Aug. 28.
Chris Brown & More: New Songs From The Best Around
But it hasn’t just been a summer newfound adulthood. Some well-established singers used June, July, and August to prove that they were only getting better with age. Chris Brown has pretty much been a tour de force this summer. Even though his album, X, didn’t end up getting released this season, he kept things fresh by releasing new tracks online, the culmination of which was a sexy collab with Nicki Minaj.
But Katy Perry, fresh off a divorce from Russell Brand, came back with vengeance that not even Chris could match. Her uplifting track, “Roar,” was an instant hit, and actually made us believe that motivational speaking could be sexy.
Austin Mahone & Ariana Grande: The Next Generation
The summer of 2013 has also been a place for the next generation to stamp out its place in our minds. Two big stars in particular really blew up – Austin Mahone and Ariana Grande with their songs, “What About Love” and “Baby I,” respectively. While Austin’s strong voice and slick dance moves confirm that he’s the next Justin, Ariana’s flat-out unbelievable voice seems to suggest that she’s the next Mariah Carey — a true superstar.
