Despite a few nay-sayers, 1D is generally receiving a warm welcome onto the big screen.
Directioners all over the world are counting down the seconds until the official release of One Direction‘s first movie This Is Us – hitting theaters Aug. 29 and 30 in the UK and US, respectively — but is it really worth the wait? HollywoodLife.com did a web-wide sweep to find out what the critics are saying about 1D’s leap to the big screen, and the reviews appear to be mostly positive.
Even when a reviewer isn’t particularly blown away by the band itself — is that really what’s on trial here? — the critic acknowledges that fans will likely love the full-length feature as much as they love the boys themselves.
Variety
The film's central fivesome prove charming pallbearers throughout the film, which alternates between inspired and insipid as it hits its hagiographic marks. Directioners should show up in full force. … The performance footage is quite well shot and ably tarted up with some eye-catching 3D bells and whistles.
The Telegraph
This Is Us has been made with these fans in mind, and there's nothing like a guaranteed profit to stifle creativity.
Digital Spy
Super Size Me‘s Morgan Spurlock might be a promising choice as director, but there’s none of that Oscar-nominated doc’s sharp wit or inventiveness on show here. Instead we get a product that’s sanitised, squeaky clean and so painfully afraid of controversy and revelation.
Mirror
I feel the need to give this review a special note, as it’s my favorite. I feel like the UK’s Mirror reviewer is the only person who actually understands what this movie is supposed to be:
Shots of Harry Styles curly locks up close? Check. Footage of Liam Payne in his pants? Check. Zayn Malik looking brooding on camera? Check. And Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson paying pranks on the gang? Yep, it's in the bag.
And This Is Us is all in 3D so fans will feel so close to the band that if it had smellovision you would discover Harry's shampoo of choice.
