Police hope to positively identify the burned body found in a cabin in Big Bear, Calif. as that of the accused cop killer, whom the police pursued on Feb. 12 in a violent manhunt. Chris barricaded himself in the cabin before it erupted in flames.

The statewide manhunt for former LAPD police officer and accused cop killer Chris Dorner came to an end at a cabin in Big Bear late on the night of Feb. 12, during which police and Chris had a violent shootout before he barricaded himself in the cabin.

San Bernadino County Sheriff’s office said in a statement that Chris "fled into the forest and barricaded himself inside a cabin. A short time later there was an exchange of gunfire between law enforcement and the suspect." Two deputies were shot and taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where one died and one was in surgery.

Authorities were preparing to enter the cabin, a source tells NBC news, and police officers had started breaking down the doors, breaking the windows and firing tear gas inside. The source added that police heard a single gunshot inside the cabin, and soon after it erupted in smoke and flames.

Although the body inside the cabin hasn’t been positively identified as Chris Dorner, police say it’s likely the body belongs to the accused cop killer, sources tell NBC news. San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Department said authorities will attempt to identify Chris’ body ”through forensic means,” and hope to do so on Feb. 13.

Chris Dorner Wanted For Killing Police Officers

Police chased Chris Dorner throughout Big Bear Lake, Calif. on Feb. 12, in a frenzied manhunt that included helicopters, road blocks and deadly gunfire.

Chris had been wanted by police for nearly two weeks, and the former LAPD officer vowed to seek vengeance for what he called a wrongful termination from the force. He had been accused of shooting three police officers dead, and warned to kill more.
