Crystal Kelly refused to abort an unborn baby she was carrying for a couple once the ultrasound revealed a series of disabilities. The surrogate fled to Michigan where she was legally acknowledged as the mother to save the baby's life.
Crystal Kelly, 29, was paid $22,000 to have a baby for a Connecticut couple, but was horrified when the baby girl’s parents instructed Crystal to get an abortion after disabilities in the child were revealed in the ultrasound. The biological parents to offered Crystal $10,000 to abort the baby. She asked for $15,000, but the parents refused.
The baby's parents aggressively requested custody of the child with intentions of placing her in foster care. After an on-going legal battle with the parents, Crystal flew to Michigan to give birth to the child according to CNN, thus leaving the child to be fostered, rather than being raised by herself or the originally intended parents.
The couple, who desperately desired a fourth child, provided the surrogate with an embryo they had left over from a previous round of in-vitro fertilization. The process began on Oct. 8 2011, and Crystal became pregnant only 10 days later.
The Disability Debacle
The biological mother kept closely in touch with Crystal and called her daily to check on her morning sickness. She gave Christmas gifts to Crystal and her two daughters and even paid off the monthly surrogate fee ahead of time since Crystal was currently faced with financial issues.
"I want you to come to us with anything because you're going to be part of our lives forever," said Kelley to CNN. Things began to change in February when the ultrasound test showed that the baby's development was not going as smoothly as it once did.
The ultrasound revealed that the baby had a cleft lip and palate, a cyst in her brain and a series of heart defects according to the Daily Mail. A spleen and stomach were undetectable. Doctors at Hartford Hospital said the baby needed a variety of surgeries after birth and had a 25 percent chance of living normally.
The parents requested pregnancy termination as they saw the baby's medical problems as overwhelming for the infant. Nonetheless, Crystal is very religious and disagreed stating that "all efforts should be made to give the baby a chance."
