Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice has been fired by the New Jersey University after he was caught on tape yelling homophobic slurs and physically and verbally abusing players.
Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice is at the fore front of the news after he was caught on tape abusing his players by shoving them and calling one a ”f**king fairy…” and a “f**king fa**got.” Now, Mike has been FIRED for his disgusting and completely heinous homophobic rant. Is this enough?
Mike Rice Is Fired After Homophobic Basketball Rant
“President Barchi and Tim Pernetti announced this morning that Mike Rice will not continue to coach at #Rutgers.” tweeted the University on April 3.
“I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice,” said Rutgers Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Pernetti to CNN. “Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community.”
The video, which ESPN said features excerpts of practice sessions shot between 2010 and 2012, earned Mike a three-game suspension and a $50,000 fine in November. Administrators were under pressure from incensed state officials to dismiss the coach, but it took this video coming to light to finally gain Mike’s dismissal.
It is disgraceful that it took the video coming to light to gain Mike’s dismissal. He should have been fired a long time ago.
Celebs Are Outraged Over Mike Rice’s Rant
Governor Chris Christie is shocked after seeing the video and his spokesperson said: “Governor Christie saw the video today for the first time and he is obviously deeply disturbed by the conduct displayed and strongly condemns this behavior. It’s not the type of leadership we should be showing our young people and clearly there are questions about this behavior that need to be answered by the leaders at Rutgers University.”
“If my son played for Rutgers or a coach like that he would have some real explaining to do and I’m still gone whoop on him afterwards! C’mon,” said NBA star Lebron James on Twitter.
Famous television journalist Larry King tweeted “#Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice should have been fired long ago when the incident occurred, his treatment of players was a disgrace.”
The school’s athletic director Tim Pernetti was unsure whether or not to fire Mike, but the decision has since been made.
“You have to be always cautious about public reaction, because the reaction the public is having is the same I had when I saw it,” he said. “I am factoring everything into what we do going forward. I don’t want to put any negatively on the university when we have a lot of real good things going on.”
What do YOU think HollywoodLifers? Do you think firing Mike was the right decision?
