The reviews are in! Selena’s new flick ‘Getaway’ is out and the critics love Selena — find out what they’re saying!
Selenators all across the world will be packing movie theaters this weekend to see Selena Gomez kick butt in Getaway (in theaters on Aug. 30). And lucky for them, several reviews praise Selena for playing such a feisty, fierce tech kid.
‘Getaway’ Reviews: Critics Love Selena Gomez As ‘The Kid’
In the movie, Selena plays The Kid, who joins Ethan Hawke‘s character, Brent Magna, on a high-speed race where they’re forced to listen to the commands of a mysterious voice. So what’s Hollywood saying about Selena’s action flick? HollywoodLife.com did a sweep around the Internet to find out, and while they’re not necessarily fans of the movie itself, Selena is definitely a favorite.
Variety
During a brief respite after the opening melee, a feisty teen (Gomez) appears brandishing a handgun and claiming to be the Shelby's rightful owner. But despite the brusque meet-cute, Gomez's unnamed character (billed only as "The Girl") isn't quite the girl-gone-wild she played to great effect earlier this year in Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers." In this pic's fanciful universe, she's supposed to be a whiz-kid computer hacker, though none of the techno-babble she spews about servers and video feeds and compromised firewalls suggests she would know her way around even a Commodore 64.

Just when the vicarious thrill of watching him obey the Voice's order to "smash everything you can" loses its novelty, Brent is carjacked by the Kid (Selena Gomez), a shrill, bossy young woman with a baby face and a chip on her shoulder.
It seems that the vehicle was her car, stolen, then souped-up for the big chase. As her tantrum subsides, we learn that the car was a present from her father, the chief executive of the city's largest investment bank. She is also a computer whiz awkwardly spouting reams of techno jargon, spiced with profanities, as she helps Brent outwit the Voice.

And then Selena Gomez shows up as the mouthy, tech-savvy sidekick dragged along for a long, Christmas season chase through the not-quite-generic (tramlines, train tracks) mean streets of Sofia. That’s where the silly kicks in.

Although her spunky tough-girl persona is thin, Gomez proves to be an exceptionally good sport in a crash-crazy plot.
