In light of the death of Shain Gandee, I think it only makes good sense to cancel the ‘Buckwild’ series. Anybody who’s watched the show knows that every week, the cast performs reckless stunts including making potato shotguns, racing through mud in ATV vehicles, rolling down hills in large tires, jumping off bridges, and so much more.
They pride themselves on doing wild and crazy things that are dangerous. In the trailer, Buckwild star Ashley Whitt was quoted, “That’s nuts — we shouldn’t be doing this.”
‘Buckwild’ Encourages Reckless & Dangerous Behavior
The whole show’s premise is based upon showcasing dangerous behavior by young people and saying that it’s fun. It’s like Jackass, but with amateurs. And the allure of doing this in front of cameras probably only makes them take more risks.
Clearly, it provided encouragement for Shain Gandee to take risks in his off camera life. By doing it in front of the camera, he was being given a green light to take risks — to indulge in risky and potentially dangerous behavior.
The Young Cast Members Are Vulnerable To Make Irrational Decisions
The entire show is based around being crazy and wild. It’s one thing to have people who are trained stunt people performing what looks like dangerous stunts, but it’s another thing to have regular young adults performing such acts.
A study done by the University of Rochester Medical Center shows that the rational part of the brain isn’t fully developed until the age of 25, so people this age think they’re invincible. Sometimes, young adults have a hard time making good judgement calls. But Buckwild is all about making bad judgement calls.
MTV Needs To Cancel ‘Buckwild’ After Shain’s Death
Out of respect for Shain’s family, MTV should cancel the series. Do they really want to air footage they’ve already filmed of Shain? It will certainly be painful for his family to see that. Also, for them to see Shain’s friends engaging in equally reckless behavior in the future.
We think it’s important that Shain’s parents have a say in the future of the show, and the cast members should be able to decide whether they want to continue. Shain’s death likely put an enormous damper on the whole experience.
