In a move that is both heartwarming and honorable, Louisville has decided to pay all of Kevin’s medical bills following his shocking leg injury. Incredible!
After the horrifying leg injury that Kevin Ware received during his team’s NCAA tournament game against Duke on March 31, Louisville University has decided to pay all of his medical bills that added up to $90,000!. How great!
Kevin Ware’s Medical Expenses — Louisville University Will Foot The Bill
Kevin, 20, suffered what may be the most awful injury in the history of sports, when he fell and his tibia bone ripped his skin and protruded from his leg. But not only is his health improving, but it looks like his wallet is improving, as well, as Louisville has decided to pay for his medical expenses. Talk about an amazing gesture!
Kenny Klein, who is Louisville senior associate athletic director for media relations has announced:
“There is generally no out-of-pocket medical expenses for the student-athlete or his family, and none for Kevin in this instance.”
NCAA’s Policy For Paying Student Athletes’ Medical Bills
With NCAA rules being so detailed, student-athletes have a certain amount of insurance provided for them, but during championship situations — which the NCAA tournament happens to be — they will cover medical expenses up to $90,000.
After that, the NCAA’s catastrophic insurance policy — with a deductible of $90,000 and maximum benefit of $20 million – could kick in. But that is generally available only to athletes who are totally disabled.
So, in Kevin’s case, his family insurance and Louisville insurance would apply first. Then, the NCAA’s championship supplemental insurance could kick in, up to $90,000.
