What’s in a name? A whole lot of history. As the world waits for the the little Prince’s name, we reveal what’s causing the hold up!

When Kate Middleton and Prince William presented their first baby son to the world at St. Mary’s Hospital in London on July 23, the proud new dad told reporters that the new parents “are still working on the name.” So what exactly are they working on?

Kate Middleton & Prince William Naming The Royal Baby

The royal family has a lot to consider when deciding on their newest prince’s name. All three or four of His Royal Highness’s given names have to be examined relative to the family’s ancestral history. “They have to check details, such as who’s previously had the name,” Marcia Moody, author of Kate: A Biography, told Us Weekly. This process could take awhile, as we are already noticing.

"We're still working on a name," Will told reporters in his first public appearance with his baby boy. "We'll have that as soon as we can. It's the first time we've seen him really, so we haven't gotten a proper chance to catch up."

Lots of parents may wait to see their baby’s face or get a glimpse of his or her personality before they decide on a name, but for the baby Prince, his list of names will also count as a royal title. Traditionally, names of the royal family members reference a long lineage of royals and rulers past. London bookies report that regal names like George and James are top contenders.

Queen Elizabeth II has likely already been presented with a list of names and will have the final say in confirming or rejecting the baby prince’s name!

Kate delivered the beautiful, healthy baby boy at 4:24 p.m. local time on July 22 in the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital. The Prince weighed in at 8 pounds 6 ounces. His gender, weight and time of birth were revealed soon after his birth on a wood and gold easel at Buckingham Palace. We caught the first glimpse of his face one day later, when his parents spoke to reporters and he offered up his first royal wave. Now we await the reveal of his name!
