Jane Richard’s recovery is bittersweet after the loss of her brother in the same tragedy, but she is making major progress in being able to walk again. Not only is she walking, she’s back to doing what she loves — dancing.
Jane Richard, 7, tragically lost her left leg in the April 15 Boston Marathon bombings that took her 8-year-old brother Martin Richard‘s life. In a happy update to the story, Jane has been released from the hospital and is walking again with the help of a prosthetic leg. Her family has revealed wonderful updates in the girl’s recovery.
Jane Richard Update — Young Boston Bombing Victim Released From Hospital
Jane Richard has gone through 12 surgeries in the four months following the horrible Boston Marathon bombings. She was released from the hospital a few weeks ago, but her family is now releasing photos of the girl learning to walk again with crutches and a prosthetic leg.
On August 15, the Richards family released a touching statement. While they mourn the loss of their son Martin, they are grateful that their little girl is making inspiring progress:
As so many things have been, returning home without Martin certainly made that important milestone bittersweet, but we know he was with us, as he is every moment of every day.
An hour doesn’t go by that we don’t feel the agony of Martin’s death and the senseless way it came about. The pain is constant and even the sweetest moments can become heartbreaking when we are struck by the realization that “Martin would have loved this…”
But it is not all heartbreak for our family, as we are making progress on this long, difficult and painful road forward… Jane continues to be an incredible source of inspiration – and exhaustion. The loss of her leg has not slowed her one bit, or deterred her in any way.
Jane Richard Is Dancing Again
Jane is not able to wear her prosthetic leg all the time, but her family reveals that when she does, “she struts around on it with great pride and a total sense of accomplishment.”
Jane, who has been an Irish dancer for years, is also back to dancing again. “Watching her dance with her new leg, which has her weight primarily on the other leg, is absolutely priceless,” her family says in their statement.
