Zayn Malik, 20, and Perrie Edwards, 19, met on the set of The X Factor in 2011, but it wasn't until after Perrie’s band Little Mix won the competition’s eight season that their friendship blossomed into a relationship. During their two-year courtship, Zayn and Perrie weathered numerous cheating scandals, celebrated holidays together and showed their love for each other in a very permanent way. With the shocking news of their engagement on Aug. 20, we're taking a look back at how their relationship blossomed.

Nov. 19, 2011: Zayn posted his first tweet about Little Mix. He said, “So lil mix smashed it tonight, gta vote for these girls man! x” One Direction’s promotion must have worked because the girl group, consisting of Perrie, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jade Thirlwall took home the win! Since their win, they’ve sold over two million records worldwide.
December 2011: Perrie allegedly started dating Zayn! They reportedly started seeing each other after sharing a steamy encounter following One Direction’s performance on The X Factor in November 2011.
Later that month, Perrie sort of addressed dating rumors when she denied dumping Zayn. She said, “How can I possibly have dumped someone that I barely even know? It’s actually massively embarrassing.”
April 2012: Zayn sent a sweet tweet to Perrie. He said, “@PerrieLittleMix yeah tonight was fun lets do it again sometime ;) x x”
May 24, 2012: Photos surfaced of Zayn and Perrie kissing. It’s official!
August 2012: Perrie supports Zayn as he performs with One Direction at the summer Olympics. She also celebrated EID with Zayn and his family!
August 21, 2012: It’s reported that Zayn cheated on Perrie, when a video of him allegedly doing the deed is released. A girl staying at the same hotel as Zayn, caught some video footage through her room's peephole, of the boyband member allegedly hitting on a girl.
Zayn then deleted his Twitter account because he was tired of the “hate.”
September 2012: A second cheating rumor is revealed.
November 2012: Zayn and Perrie’s relationship appeared to be alive and well because they adopted a puppy together! Perrie tweeted, “New puppy :) what shall we call him x.” A follow-up tweet said, “P + Z.”
December 2012: Little Mix talked about how “smitten” Zayn is with Perrie. They said, “[We've] never seen a boy love a girl as much as he loves her.”
Later that month, Zayn jetted back to the UK to try and save his relationship with Perrie, as photos of the boy bander allegedly in a waitress’ bed surfaced. By New Year’s Eve, everything seemed great because the duo was photographed together, dressed as a pirate and catwoman.
April 2013: Zayn and Perrie post a series of cute selfies together.
June 2013: Zayn gets a cartoon-style image of Perrie tattooed on his upper arm!
August 20, 2013: Perrie is spotted wearing an engagement ring at the One Direction: This Is Us premiere.
August 21, 2013: One Direction’s rep and Perrie’s mom both confirmed the couple is engaged.
