Katie Beers survived a traumatic kidnapping in 1993. Her captor, John Esposito, was found dead in his prison cell on Sept. 4, while serving the 15-year sentence he received for the crime.

Katie Beers was kidnapped in Long Island, New York just days before her 10th birthday in 1993 and was held captive for 17 days by her neighbor John Esposito. While serving his prison sentence, he was found dead in his jail cell on Sept. 4. This surprising news came just one day after another public kidnapping figure, Ariel Castro, was found after committing suicide in his jail cell.

John Esposito, 64, was found dead in his prison cell at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, New York following a parole hearing, reports CBS News. The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision explained that he appeared to have died of natural causes.

In 1993, he admitted to police that he had kidnapped the little girl and had kept her in an underground dungeon, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Katie Beers Reacts To News Of John Esposito’s Passing

Katie remains strong in the wake of this news. She opened up about her kidnapping ordeal and traumatic history of abuse in her book, Buried Memories, and worked to move beyond her past. "I'm in a more mature place. With hindsight it is easier to recall things. My life now, I'm married, work full-time and have two beautiful children," she told CBS 2.

Katie herself drew comparisons to the passing of kidnapper Ariel Castro when she learned about the news of his death and posted the following message to her Facebook page on Sept. 4:

It’s time to close another chapter in my life. I received a phone call today shortly after 5pm from the NYS Parole board. Today was the day that John Esposito had his parole hearing. The NYS Parole board let me know that at about 3:30pm today, after his hearing, John was found unresponsive in his jail cell & pronounced dead.

I have to say that I’m not saddened by John’s passing – I’m saddened for his remaining family – they lost John a long time ago, but now they’ve lost him forever. Within 24 hours, we have lost 2 monsters – Ariel Castro, who committed suicide; and John Esposito, who has died of unknown reasons. #CourageAlways
