Having a gorgeous glow is hot — having wrinkles or skin cancer is not. While summer may be technically over, it doesn’t mean you can skimp on SPF — read our expert tips below so you can soak up the sun like Shay!

Shay Mitchell is lucky enough to live in California, where it seems like it’s always sunny and warm. She posted a cute photo on Instagram on September 4 of her having a beach day with her cute cousin. We talked with experts to share their wisdom on staying safe in the sun all year round!

Shay Mitchell At The Beach — Stay Safe With SPF

Just because your beach days may be limited after Labor Day, it doesn’t mean you’ll be hiding out in a dark cave all winter. You still need to wear SPF and protect your skin all year round. In fact, just because you wear a makeup with SPF, you still need to wear regular SPF to ensure complete protect.

Dr. Bruce Katz, Director of the Juva Skin & Laser Center in New York City, tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY:

You should definitely wear sunscreen under your makeup. Makeup brands are notorious for having lower amounts of sunscreen than they claim. Also, makeup is not easily distributed and wears off easily. Apply sunscreen first, wait a few minutes and then apply makeup. It will actually make your makeup stay on better too!

Dr. Whitney Bowe, Board Certified Dermatologist based in New York, agrees that it’s important to layer SPF under your makeup:

I always recommend wearing a moisturizer or primer with SPF first and then makeup on top. That way, if the makeup has SPF, it’s an added bonus, but you’re not relying on it to provide full UV protection.  Most makeups do not provide sufficient UV protection to be used alone. I recommend SPF 15 on those days when you’re not out in the sun for long periods of time. However, if you’re heading to the beach or playing tennis or taking a long walk outside, make sure it’s at least a 30.

To get a golden glow, yet stay protected like Shay, we like using La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Mineral Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid. It’s ultra light on your face, so you won’t break out and provides amazing coverage.

Do you wear SPF every day, HollywoodLifers?
