The head coach of Steubenville High School’s football team, Reno Saccoccia, will be investigated for failing to report the heinous crime his two players were convicted of on Mar. 17, according to a new report.
With Ma’lik Richmond, 16, and Trent Mays, 17, convicted of the rape charges brought against them in Steubenville, OH, State Attorney General Mike DeWine has announced that he intends to convene a grand jury to further investigate the case, including assessing whether their head coach, Reno Saccoccia, should face charges for failing to report the crime when he learned of it.
Of the grand jury, which will convene on April 15, Mike says, “We cannot put this to bed. We cannot bring finality to this without the convening of the grand jury.”
MailOnline reports that sixteen people refused to co-operate with investigators and the possible crimes that the grand jury can charge them with are failure to report a felony, failure to report child abuse and obstruction of justice.
Coach Reno Saccoccia Implicated By Text Messages
Interviews with all 19 of Steubenville High School’s ‘Big Red’ team coaches are being sought out. During the case against Ma’lik and Trent, text messages were read into evidence that revealed that Coach Saccoccia was aware of the rape allegation, but did nothing other than assure the players that he could “make it go away.”
In a text conversation between Trent and a friend, the convicted rapist was asked, “What did Reno say to you…?” Trent answered, “Nothing really. We have to stay in for a week. Next time any of us do anything we are suspended from games for a month…But I feel like he took care of it for us…Yeh he was joking about it so I’m not worried.” In a text to another friend, Trent said, “Na IDGAF (I don’t give a f***) I got Reno he took care of it ain’t s*** gonna happen even if xxx did take it to court.”
Coach Saccoccia’s actions are reminiscent of those of the late Joe Paterno, who was fired as head coach at Penn State after 46 years after his inaction over sexual abuse allegations against assistant coach Jerry Sandusky came to light in Nov. 2011.
