A mother of a surviving Sandy Hook child wrote a letter for Newton Action Alliance about her child’s post-traumatic stress after the horrific shooting on Dec. 14. She revealed her daughter’s nightmares, lack of sleep and overwhelming fear — read her emotional letter.
One of Carrie Lendroth Battaglia three daughters was in her first grade class next door to a classroom where Adam Lanza killed the largest amount of people during the terrifying Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Carrie wrote a letter for Newtown Action Alliance Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after the horrifying ordeal, detailing her daughter’s struggle in the hopes of stricter gun laws.
Carrie’s daughter was in her classroom when she heard the shooting, and was later moved to the bathroom inside the classroom by her teacher along with other students.
Carrie Writes What Her Daughter Witnessed In The Classroom
“She heard everything. Shooting. Screaming. Pleading. She was sure she was going to die that day and did not want to die for Christmas. Each time she hears a loud or unfamiliar noise, she experiences the fear she had in that bathroom,” Carrie writes in her letter.
ManySandy Hook Students Suffer From PTSD
Carrie also discusses how her daughter isn’t the only one who has post traumatic stress disorder from witnessing the tragic murders — other students have greatly changed as well.
“All of her classmates have PTSD. She struggles nightly with nightmares, difficulty falling asleep, and being afraid to go anywhere in her own home. At school she becomes withdrawn, crying daily, covering her ears when it gets too loud and waiting for this to happen again.”
Carrie Wants More Gun Control
With her family personally and seriously impacted by gun violence, Carrie is furious that legislators are shuffling their feet when it comes to gun control.
“It's time to stop catering to the gun owners and lobbyists and start caring about our children, our families, our teachers, our friends and our neighbors. The NRA does not care about people, they care about money. We are trying to move forward, but there must be change. If our lawmakers cannot make this change, then we, as a people will elect those who will.”
What do YOU think of what Carrie wrote in her letter, HollyMoms? Do you agree with her sentiments about gun control?
