So sad! The trailblazing psychologist passed away on May 13 in New York City at the age of 85.
Dr. Joyce Brothers, the woman who was once considered the most famous psychologist on the planet, died on May 12 in New York City. She was 85 years old – the cause of her death has not been made public.
Dr. Joyce Brothers Passes Away At 85
Joyce found fame by pioneering television advice shows in the 1950s, and also had a long career as a syndicated columnist, author, and film personality. In her career she published 15 books and made guest appearances on popular television shows like The Simpsons and Happy Days. She appeared on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show nearly 100 times.
Dr. Brothers first got the nation’s attention by appearing as a contestant on The $64,000 Question, a show that quizzed contestants on their areas of expertise, in 1955. She became the first woman to win the show and only the second to win the top prize. After winning the show for a second time and becoming one of the biggest game show winners in history, Joyce was actually rumored to have cheated, though she never admitting to any wrongdoing. The controversy though was enough to spur her long career as an advice-giver on TV and radio.
Joyce was also an advocate for women’s rights. In the 70s, she called for erasing sexual bias in school textbooks, claiming that nonsexist cultures were proven to be less violent.
Joyce was married to Milton Brothers, an internist, who passed away in 1989. The couple had one child together, Lisa. She is also survived by her sister Elaine, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
