On May 13, James Holmes entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, and the judge will decide by May 28 whether or not to accept the plea.
After the prosecution announced that they will seek the death penalty for James Holmes, he entered his a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity on May 13. James is accused of opening fire on a movie theater in Aurora, Colo. on July 20 2012 during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises, where 12 people were killed and 70 were injured.
James Holmes Pleads Insanity
A plea of not guilty had previously been entered on 25-year-old James’ behalf in March by the judge, because his lawyers weren’t prepared to plead for him at the time. However, on May 13 he formally pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in a believed attempt to avoid the death penalty, reports Yahoo! News.
HollywoodLife.com previously reported that James was planning this plea, and judge will decide whether to accept this plea by the end of the month.
James is charged with 24 first degree murder counts, and 116 counts of attempted murder.
Psychiatrist Dr. Carole Lieberman spoke to HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY about the appearance of James’ mental state at one of his hearings:
James looked as if he was trying to wake up from a nightmare. But every time he opened his eyes, he realized the nightmare was real. This confusion is typical of people who have immersed themselves in fantasy media violence and are having trouble getting back in touch with reality.
He could be medicated or sleep deprived. No way he's not faking, because he had episodes where he is trying to keep his eyes open. His behavior is too consistent, he did it too many times. It was like he was groggy.
