Sources close to Cory say his ‘Glee’ castmates were well aware of his heroin addiction, and they pushed him to go back to rehab last spring. Read on to find out more about how they tried to save Cory.
The world was shocked by Cory Monteith‘s tragic death, but his Glee castmates apparently knew the actor was headed down a dangerous path, and they encouraged him to check into a substance abuse facility last spring. Read on for more details.
Cory Monteith Rehab — How ‘Glee’ Cast Tried To Save Him
The cast of Glee, along with several producers for the show, knew about Cory’s struggles with heroin addiction, and they played a major role in his decision to go back to rehab at the end of March 2013.
Sources say Cory’s castmates were very concerned when they realized he was relapsing, and they knew they had to address the issue with him, according to TMZ.
They sat down with Cory, 31, and had an “open conversation” with him about his addiction, and one source says Cory was willing to listen.
“It wasn’t met with resistance,” the source said. “He was always so grateful and aware of how fortunate he was.”
Cory Monteith Death — His Glee Castmates Encouraged Him To Go To Rehab
Cory, who was always very open about his struggle with substance abuse, began his second stint in rehab in March 2013 — and his devoted girlfriend Lea Michele, 26, bravely stood by his side during the difficult time.
"I love and support Cory and will stand by him through this," she told PEOPLE. "I am grateful and proud he made this decision."
A source tells TMZ that Glee producers and cast members were more concerned about Cory than the effect his absence would have on the show.
“The decision was to best help our friend,” the source said. “The needs of the show fell second to his well-being.”
Cory returned from his March trip to rehab at the end of April, and he seemed to be back on the right path. It’s clear Lea and Cory’s other Glee castmates had no idea he was still struggling with his addiction.
That wasn't the first time Cory went for treatment — he first checked in for his addiction when he was 19 after his friends and family staged an intervention.
Despite Cory’s attempts to get clean, he eventually succumbed to his demons, dying from a fatal combination of heroin and alcohol at age 31. His body was found in a Vancouver hotel on July 13.
Our thoughts are with Lea and Cory's castmates, friends and family during this sad time.
