The man who fired shots at a Georgia elementary school on August 20 has been identified as 20-year-old Michael Brandon Hill. Read on for more details.

Michael Brandon Hill is suspected of firing at at least half a dozen shots at the Ronald E McNair Discover Learning Academy in Decatur, Georgia. Michael, who is in police custody, is facing charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, terroristic threats and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Officials say Michael may have slipped in behind an employee at the elementary school before confronting staff members at approximately 1 p.m.

When police arrived at the scene, Michael shot at the officers, who returned fire when it was safe to do so, DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander said.

Michael surrendered shortly after, and thankfully, no one was injured in this terrible gun scare.

"When we received the call and we engaged, he started to fire from inside the school at our officers. He had one or two of the staff members inside the main office. He was holding them captive," Cedric said. He added that Michael had multiple guns in his possession, including an AK-47.

Immediate Response To The Scene In Decatur, Georgia

Multiple shots were fired inside the charter school for grades Pre-K through 5th grade, witnesses on the scene told police. Officials immediately responded to the scene and entered the school as the students were evacuated.

Scary pictures have come forward of students running out of the elementary school. The kids were seen gathered outside the school, near the buses in the parking lot, and firefighters cut a hole in a nearby home so children could evacuate school grounds through the back of the house.

"We could not bring the children around to the front of the school because we didn't know if explosives were in the vehicle," Cedric said. "Now, this deviates from our typical plan, but this was a very unusual situation, where we had to get the kids away from any possible explosives."

Luckily, the children had been trained to deal with emergency incidents like this, in light of past school shootings like the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, reports CNN. The quick thinking among the faculty, staff, and students likely prevented this from escalating.
