Rihanna is first in line to portray the woman who, basically, invented twerking. Is this the role RiRi was born to play?
This is the story of a sexy dancer, singer and actress known for pushing the envelope and captivating people’s attention with her exotic flare. You might assume we’re talking about Rihanna, and rightfully so, but we’re actually referring to the legendary Josephine Baker, the sexy entertainer who assisted the French Resistance during World War II. And rumor has it, Rihanna will be playing her in a new movie!
There’s currently a play about Josephine being done in London — Josephine And I, written and performed by Cush Jumbo; and directed by Phyllida Lloyd, mother of British actress Emma Thompson – and buzz around London is that it’ll soon be adapted into a movie. Rihanna is reportedly producers’ first choice to play the iconic Ms. Baker.
Rihanna’s History In Film
Of course, Rihanna is no stranger to the big screen. RiRi made her cinematic debut in 2012′s Battleship, playing Petty Officer Cora “Weps” Raikes — a woman of few words, but lots of sassitude. She followed up that critically beloved performance with a cameo in 2013′s This Is The End, a haunting foretelling of how Hollywood heavyweights will handle the impending apocalypse. (Spoiler alert: Most of them will die horrifically.)
Prior to those in-theater appearances, Rihanna also lent her talent to several straight-to-DVD features, including 2006′s Bring It On: All Or Nothing. The third film in the five-part Bring It On series, All Or Nothing allowed RiRi to play herself, while still exploring her range as an actress. She also performed two of her biggest hits, “Pon De Replay” and “SOS.”
Rihanna has not spoken about the possibility of playing Josephine, but HollywoodLife.com has reached out to her reps for comment.
