A New Zealand baby was left sleeping inside a locked car alone in a parking lot, while the mother was inside the local store! She even left a sign on the baby saying she had ‘gone shopping’ — how awful!
A newborn baby sleeping in a carseat was left in the passenger’s seat of a car in the parking lot of a Pak ‘n Save store in Porirua, New Zealand, while the mother went inside to do shopping. The baby was left alone wrapped in a warm hat and pink blanket with no parent in sight — and a note placed on top of her body.
“My mum’s in doing the shopping, call her if I need anything,” the note read.
A man parked his car next to the vehicle where the baby was sleeping, and noticed the infant and the note. He told the New Zealand Herald that he and his wife waited for the woman to come back for her sleeping baby.
“We waited there for a little bit, wondering if the mum was just going to be two seconds and come back,” the man told the newspaper. “My wife said, ‘I’m not going in without someone being here with the baby.’”
Baby Left Alone In Car Met With Public Outrage
After the photo was taken, radio DJ Polly Gillespie posted the photo on his Facebook page, and was met with a number of negative comments.
“I’m sorry this is completely irresponsible! You do not leave children under the age of 14 unsupervised at all,” someone on Facebook named Cat Marie Horne wrote.
Mother Of Sleeping Infant Unidentified
The local law states that if a child under the age of 14 is left alone for an “unreasonable time or unreasonable conditions,” the parent or guardian could be fined up to $2,000 New Zealand dollars, or approximately $1,280 US dollars.
Unfortunately, the mother of the baby has not yet been identified.
“We don’t know who the people are, we don’t know the phone number, we don’t know where to start,” a spokesperson for the police force said, according to the Daily Mail. “We would launch an investigation if we could but at this stage no one’s come forward.”
