Spring Breakers is an artsy, deranged, ultra-violent-sexual movie that turns moviemaking conventions on their head, but that didn’t deter tons of people from heading to the theaters to see Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine shed their cookie-cutter images.
‘Spring Breakers’ Surprises At The Box Office
The movie cracked the box office top ten, coming in at number six with a total of $5 million, according to Deadline. The numbers are shocking because of the movie’s art house roots and graphic content, but also because its wide-release was actually pretty limited. Spring Breakers opened in 1,100 theaters across the nation, whereas movies like Admission and The Croods opened in over 2,000 and 4,000 theaters, respectively.
The draw of Disney stars like Selena and Vanessa doing bong hits and having threesomes was evidently huge — tapping into those big fan bases certainly helped the film outperform expectations. And the hype around James Franco’s role as an endearing corn-rowed gangster didn’t hurt.
One weekend in and Spring Breakers can be called a financial success — director Harmony Korine made the movie for only $4 million, so everything from here on out is profit.

The Spring Breakers success must feel so good for these young female stars, who risked turning off their youthful followings with these racy roles.
Selena admitted she was “nervous” to take her role, but in the end was happy she did: “It was a lot of work and I was nervous! But that is what is such a joy to be an actor to get these opportunities! To get to do these things was fun,” she told HollywoodLife.com exclusively.
The gamble definitely paid off – Spring Breakers is a hit!
