After the horrific explosions at the Boston Marathon that killed three and injured over 150 people, the 19-year-old suspect was spotted on the UMass Dartmouth Campus.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, is a sophomore at UMass Dartmouth and lives in a dorm on campus. After the alleged terrorist attack, students saw Dzhokhar on campus. When authorities discovered his connection to the university, the campus was evacuated April 19.
UMass Dartmouth Students Share Personal Details About Dzhokhar
Students who knew Dzhokhar, or have seen him around campus, gave CBS a little insight into the kind of person he is. Students described him as a “pothead,” and also as a soccer fanatic. His classmates also revealed he’s a member of the soccer team, but did not show up to practice April 15.
Two students reported seeing Dzhokhar on campus April 16 and 17 after the marathon bombings. Some students even claimed he had a reputation as a horrible driver, and people were afraid to ride around campus with him.
Though many people are posing questions about Dzhokhar’s political or religious views, students claim that he’s quiet, studious, and never talks politics.
UMass Dartmouth Wrestling Team Captain Defends Dzhokhar
In an interview with CNN, the captain of the UMass Dartmouth Wrestling team, Jahar, spoke out in defense of Dzhokhar.
Jahar said, "I saw a picture [of Dzhokhar] and at first I thought it was a joke or something and I couldn't believe it was him. It was so shocking. The reason I came here is because I want people to know that he's a really nice guy."
He continued, "Every time I see him he would keep smiling. The only time I’ve seen him mad was when he would lose a wrestling match. All the people from Cambridge — all his friends — know he’s a nice guy.”
When asked to send Dzhokhar a message, Jahar said, “If he has a gun or anything right now, drop the gun, come forward you can resolve this situation do it the right way."
We wish the continued safety of everyone in Watertown and the surrounding areas, and hope this matter is resolved in a quick and peaceful manner.
