After carrying another young boy a block-and-a-half to medical attention, Matt heroically rushed back to the blast site to help rescue innocent victims. There, he saw the small body of little Martin, and realized he had not survived the bomb explosion. He tells the Daily Mail:
We just knew he was gone. He had very serious, serious injuries… There was nothing in his eyes.
Matt and other Good Samaritans tried desperately to help the little boy any way they could. He adds:
When I reached him, there were just people helping as best they could. His clothes were torn and charred. I can’t say if they were ripped from the blast or from people trying to save him.
The firefighter then administered two breaths of CPR to Martin, and covered the lifeless body with a sheet.
