Cameron is set to play the musical’s wicked orphan-wrangler — but is she right for the part?
If you thought Sandra Bullock was a strange choice to play the iconic musical villain Miss Hannigan in the upcoming big-screen remake of Annie, you’ll probably be even more surprised by her replacement. After the Blind Side star backed out of the movie — which features Beasts of the Southern Wild‘s Quvenzhané Wallis in the title role – Cameron Diaz was given the part, HollywoodLife.com‘s sister site Deadline is reporting. (Say what?)
Also starring in the updated version of the classic musical is Jamie Foxx, who will undoubtedly put his own spin on the character of Daddy Warbucks, the richer-than-God man who (spoiler alert) eventually adopts Annie and saves her from a life of tone-deaf squalor.
Deadline reports that Annie will begin filming this fall, and is scheduled to be released around Christmas 2014.
Who Should Play Miss Hannigan In ‘Annie’?
No offense to Cameron, but you have to admit she’s a pretty shocking choice to play Miss Hannigan, considering the actresses who have previously filled her little girl-hating shoes.
Comedy legend Carol Burnett played her in the original 1982 movie, and Glee star Jane Lynch is currently playing her in the musical’s Broadway revival. Personally, I would have loved to see Jane as Miss Hannigan; I know she has to film Glee, but wasn’t Sue Sylvester fired from McKinley High? It’s not like we’d miss her while she was out filming Annie!
HollywoodLifers, do you think Cameron will make a good Miss Hannigan in Annie? Watch our interview with Jane Lynch below, then cast your vote.
