While gay rights activists nationwide flew rainbow flags on June 26 when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage, the youngest Obama girl rocked a rainbow bag!
Sasha Obama Takes Rainbow Bag On Flight To Africa
Sasha showed off her festive tote on June 26 while she was with her parents and older sister Malia Obama, 14. The First Family was on the way to board a flight to Africa, where President Obama is set to give a speech in Cape Town, South Africa. The family will also be visiting Sengal and Tanzania.
The youngest Obama daughter brought her bright bag on the flight, and sported the festive rainbow pattern — a significant symbol in the gay community.
Sasha Obama Rocks Festive Tote On Day DOMA Struck Down
Sasha showed off her tote the same day the Supreme Court ruled the Defense of Marriage Act, which prevented the federal government from recognizing sex marriage, unconstitutional. The groundbreaking new ruling is a huge step forward for gay matrimony, and the 12 states that legally allow it.
President Obama Supports Gay Marriage
Although he originally was opposed to gay marriage, President Obama changed his mind in favor of same sex marriage. He revealed his change of heart in May 2012 in a speech during his reelection campaign:
There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents, and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.
