Appearing on ‘Good Morning America’ on June 27, Demi revealed she is working hard to handle the sad death of her estranged father, and that she is also using the tragedy as inspiration for a good cause.
Demi Lovato is showing unbelievable strength after the passing of her biological father, who died on June 23 in part due to untreated mental health and addiction issues. The 20-year-old singer hasn’t withdrawn from the world — instead she is putting on a strong face and using her estranged father’s death to raise awareness and improve treatment for those with mental health issues.
Demi Lovato Speaks Out About Father’s Death
“I’m handling it okay,” Demi told Robin Roberts on Good Morning America. “My father and I didn’t have the most ideal relationship but at the end of the day he’s still my dad.” Demi and her father Patrick Lovato, 53, had been estranged for nearly five years. Like his daughter, he too was struggling with mental health and addiction problems, and Demi revealed that she cut off communication with him after he “let her down” over and over again.
“It’s difficult,” Demi continued. “I grew up with him and he’s a wonderful person, but I’m handling it okay.”
Demi Announces The Lovato Treatment Scholarship
Demi revealed that she is making big moves in an effort to remember her father. During the GMA interview, Demi announced the Lovato Treatment Scholarship, a program in conjunction with CAST Recovery that will cover expenses of treatment for one person who is struggling with mental health or addiction issues at a time.
“I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason,” Demi said, explaining how her father’s death inspired her to take a more hands-on role in raising awareness and helping others with conditions similar to hers and her father’s. “My father dealt with mental illnesses and he wasn’t able to function in society and that happens to a lot of people,” Demi stated.
The way Demi is dealing with her father’s sad death is so admirable. She isn’t wallowing in the pain; she’s working to make herself and the world better! What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Let us know!
