‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ fans were pretty surprised to learn that ‘Sons of Anarchy’ star Charlie will be playing Christian Grey in the upcoming adaptation of the popular erotic novel. While Charlie may not have the sleek Christian Grey appeal going just yet, he did look very buff and sexy when he stepped out for the first time since author E.L. James made the casting announcement on Sept. 2. Read on for all the details!
All eyes are on Charlie Hunnam now that he’s been chosen to play Christian Grey in the the movie version of Fifty Shades of Grey. On the day of the big reveal, the British actor was spotted out and about in Los Angeles shortly before he hopped a flight out of Los Angeles International Airport on Sept. 2. Can you picture him as Christian Grey?
Charlie Hunnam: Christian Grey Looks Buff After '50 Shades' Announcement
Charlie, 33, looked decidedly un-Christian in an oversized T-shirt, baggy jeans and Nike sneakers as he made his way to brunch with a friend in LA on Sept. 2. He was even carrying his own luggage — something the lavish Christian wouldn’t be caught dead doing. But if you use your imagination, it’s easy to see how this tall, hunky bearded blonde will fill the shoes of tormented young entrepreneur Christian Grey.
Charlie’s already got the “smoldering” blue-grey eyes we’ve all read so much about — all he needs now are a shave, a haircut and a killer suit!
Of course, some fans just don’t see it, and there’s been a big backlash about the casting choice on the Internet.
Fifty Shades producer Dana Brunetti fired back at the haters, tweeting, “There is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc. So if your favorite wasn’t cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective.”
Well said! Charlie certainly has the talent and the looks, so we’re sure he’ll be great in Fifty Shades!
Charlie Hunnam Cast In ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’: Meet Your Christian Grey
Fifty Shades author E.L. James revealed Charlie as Christian shortly after she announced Dakota Johnson would play Anastasia Steele, tweeting, “The gorgeous and talented Charlie Hunnam will be Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.” The 6’1″ actor is a veteran best known for his lead role as Jax Teller in FX’s Sons of Anarchy. He was also the lead role in the summer 2013 action flick Pacific Rim. Charlie has acting credits that date all the way back to 1999. His chiseled features and ability to play bad boys seem to be a perfect fit for the role of Christian.
It might be for the best that the team behind Fifty Shades went for a lesser-known star. With so many avid fans harboring thoughts about who Christian is, choosing Charlie allows them to paint their own ideas onto him, because they likely don’t know anything else about him. That trick wouldn’t be as possible if say, Ian Somerhalder took on the role, with his history of playing Damon on The Vampire Diaries getting in the way.
But what do YOU think, HollywoodLifers? Is Charlie is a good choice to play Christian Grey? Let us know!

Take Our Poll
s much as I adore Charlie Hunnum as a person and an actor (and love his character "Neil Caffrey" in the outstanding "White Collar"), I would not want him to be in a movie version of "Fifty Shades of Grey": Charlie is too intelligent and too good an actor and right now the book is dreadful. If -- and this is a big 'if' -- a screenplay were made that was excellent (and explored the multiple layers of the characters and had great dialogue) AND had an outstanding director (i.e., Soderburgh et al, who could get beyond the surface 'porn' and shallowness of the book), that's the only way I would want Matt to make a choice to do a movie like that. He's so much better than that. Yes, Charlie Hunnum is sexy and can convey depths to his characters, but I'd prefer he make really intelligent choices in his movie roles. I'd go see anything that he's in, but even though he's the sexiest male star on TV or in movies today, "Christian Grey" is the right role for him. Matt can play "dark", but he's also sweet and he's way too intelligent to take part in a shallow film unless a top-notch director and screenwriter were involved.
