After being arrested for disorderly conduct on April 19, Reese is doing the right thing by owning up to her mistake and apologizing for verbally abusing the police. Read on to see the actress’ penitent statement.
The darling actress Reese Witherspoon wasn’t so darling on April 19, mouthing off to an Atlanta, Ga. policeman while her husband, James Toth, was being arrested for DUI. As a result, 37-year-old Reese got locked up for disorderly conduct for her troubles. As news about the couple’s brush with the law broke on April 21, Reese decided to take responsibility for her actions, releasing an apologetic statement.
Reese Witherspoon Apologizes After Disorderly Conduct Arrest
She could have shied away from the reality of the situation, but instead Reese admirably took full blame for her inappropriate behavior:
Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that was no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I am very sorry for my behavior.
The statement, which says all the right things, is just the first step of damage control for the actress. The police report obtained by our sister site Variety gave a very detailed description of Reese’s wild actions, stating that ”Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe that I was a real police officer," and also, "Mrs. Witherspoon asked, ‘Do you know my name?’ I answered, ‘No, I don't need to know your name.’ I then added, ‘right now.’ Mrs. Witherspoon stated, ‘You're about to find out who I am.’”
Reese Witherspoon Gracefully Apologizes
The actress likely turned off thousands of fans with her actions, but at least she’s being forthright and handling the situation like an adult instead of avoiding it altogether. She’s usually so graceful and likable, we think this statement affirms that and shows that her actions on April 19 were just one unfortunate mistake.
Reese and her husband are scheduled to appear in court on April 22 at 8 AM, though neither is expected to show and a lawyer will reportedly ask for a postponement.
