Where’s the compassion, Serena? In a new interview, the Wimbledon winner said that the victim of the Steubenville, Ohio rape case should not have gotten so drunk, and she shouldn’t have ‘put herself in that position.’
Serena Williams made a number of controversial remarks about the Steubenville, Ohio rape case in a new interview with Rolling Stone. Serena suggested that the 16-year-old girl, who was tragically raped by two classmates, only has herself to blame because she was drunk. Serena said the girl “shouldn’t have put herself in that position,” and she chastises the girl’s parents for not teaching her the perils of drinking alcohol.
Serena Williams On Steubenville Rape Victim: It’s Her Fault For Being Drunk
Serena, 31, has really stooped to a new low. In the controversial interview, she insists she is not blaming the victim — who cannot be named — but she thinks the 16-year-old girl put herself in an unfortunate position.
“Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don’t know,” she said to Rolling Stone. “I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that; your parents should teach you — don’t take drinks from other people.”
The five time Wimbledon winner then continued to put her foot in her mouth when she said the girl was “lucky,” because it could have been worse.
“She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”
Where’s the compassion? There’s no excuse for those boys to have taken advantage of her. And Serena’s statements appear to be insensitive and hurtful to a gir, who is nothing but a victim.
People Tweet About Serena William’s Hurtful Comments
Needless to say, a lot of people took to Twitter to slam Serena for her disgraceful comments.
Jamil Smith tweeted: “Pro tip for @serenawilliams or others discussing rape: if ‘I’m not blaming the girl, but…’ exits your mouth, stop there. There is no ‘but.’”
Sabrina Siddiqui: “Disappointing that powerful woman like Serena Williams, who many young girls look up to, blames the victim.”
Kate R: “Seems Serena Williams needs a muzzle. Or compassion for a teenage rape victim?”
Nikki: “As such an incredible role model for women, Serena Williams should be on our side. No one deserves rape.”
Steubenville Rape: Two Boys Convicted
On March 16, Ma'lik Richmond, 16, and Trent Mays, 17, were found guilty of raping their classmate in Steubenville. They were sentenced to one and two years in juvenile detention, respectively, for their crime.
They raped the severely intoxicated high school student, and then swapped pictures and stories of the incident online.
Both boys have since apologized for the crime, and the victim’s mother was so gracious — she actually forgave them. Somehow, I doubt Serena will be forgiven for her totally insensitive comments.
What do YOU think, HollywoodLifers? Are you shocked that Serena would say something so insensitive and hurtful?
