It’s Malala Day! The Pakistani teen who was violently shot by the Taliban continues to be an inspiration to all — on July 12 she visited the UN to deliver a heart-wrenching speech promoting education for young women. Watch it live below!

Most girls celebrate their 16th birthdays with big parties or maybe even new cars, but Malala Yousafzai isn’t most girls. On July 12, Malala’s 16th birthday, the Pakistani teen traveled to the United Nations to deliver an address as part of her new role as a global campaigner for education.

Malala Yousafzai Delivers Speech To The United Nations

Malala’s speech will be the first time she has spoken in public since the Taliban violently targeted her for promoting female education in Pakistan, shooting her in the head in October 2012 as she traveled home from school.

But the Taliban’s horrific and terrifying actions have not deterred Malala. She is a staunch advocate of education, and she continues to prove that she will do anything it takes to ensure that she — and young girls around the world — can receive free schooling. Malala’s speech will be heard by over 500 young leaders from around the world at the Youth Assembly, according to ABC News. Many of the young leaders will also be speaking on behalf of the global campaign for education.

Along with delivering a moving speech to the UN on July 12 — which has been declared “Malala Day” by the UN — Malala will also present a petition signed by three million people demanding funds for books, schools and teachers, and calling for the end of child trafficking, child marriage and child labor, according to The Toronto Star.

Malala Yousafzai: A Symbol Of Freedom

It seems like an unbelievable amount of pressure to put on a 16-year-old girl, but Malala has proven that she is willing to accept the burden. Since standing up to the Taliban, Malala has become a symbol of freedom, inspiration, and equality, and by giving this speech at the United Nations, the young woman continues to inspire countless others into action.
