Netflix released its latest original series Orange is the New Black on July 11, and the critics are loving it! Based on Piper Kerman’s memoir, the series follows Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a young, perky woman from Brooklyn who is sentenced to 15 months in prison for smuggling a suitcase full of money for her former lesbian lover (Laura Prepon). Piper must leave her quaint life with fiancé Larry (Jason Biggs) for the brutal, eye-opening world of prison. Critics love this authentic series from Netflix and believe it’s well worth the streaming fee.

Smart, funny and surprisingly moving, “Orange is the New Black” dares to suggest that the pretty, white, middle-class gal that television so loves to position as an Everywoman is nothing of the kind. As Piper Chapman, Taylor Shilling has all the high-maintenance, obliviously entitled tics down pat.

Based on Piper Kerman's memoir, "Orange Is the New Black" is a funny, dramatically sound, poignant, and thoroughly addictive adventure through a bleak looking glass. "This isn't 'Oz,' " a prison official tells Piper, referring to HBO's gritty prison series; and it isn't, in terms of brutality. But for Piper, Litchfield, where moldy tubs of pudding are marked "Desert Storm" and the women clean their cells with maxipads, it's close enough. Toto, she has a feeling she's not in Whole Foods anymore.

You hear “women in prison” story, and chances are your mind spins off in multiple directions, few of them good… Instead, what you get from Jenji Kohan’s (Weeds) unexpectedly affecting new 13-episode series is a true rarity: a deft mix of comedy and drama in which the prison feels like a real place and the women are actual people, rather than a thinly veiled excuse to stage catfights, lesbian fantasies and sexual assault. As with Weeds, Kohan is telling the story of a white, middle-class woman who must suddenly cope with career criminals, but this time there’s a sad undertone to the story that makes the tale seem that much more relatable.
