With the overwhelming amount of face moisturizers containing SPF these days, it seems impossible to achieve even the slightest tan. We asked Dr. Bowe how we can achieve a tan without compromising our skin’s health.
There's no such thing as a safe tan – a tan indicates that DNA damage has already been done. If you like the look of a healthy glow, invest in a self-tanner and then layer an SPF on top if you're heading outdoors. I just used St Tropez Tanning Mousse for the first time and I'm hooked. It's tinted so you can see if you're missing any spots right away and correct it before the mousse dries.
We also know that accidents happen and sunburns might occur, especially during the summer months. Dr. Bowe offers great advice on what to do if a sunburn does happen.
Soak a washcloth in ice water, ring it out, and apply it to your face. Then pat dry with a clean towel and apply a product with a soothing ingredient like colloidal oatmeal (I like the Aveeno Eczema Therapy line). Drink plenty of water to keep hydrated, and take ibuprofen or Aleve to minimize redness and swelling. A soothing, hydrating cream like SkinCeuticals Emollience can work wonders for a burn overnight.
Sunscreen & Anti-Aging – Expert Dr. Bowe’s Advice
Another thing that can get confusing is anti-aging skin care products. What age is it appropriate to start using these skin care products?
Sunscreen is the most important anti-aging skin care you can use, and I'm already using it religiously on my 20-month-old daughter! Retinoids such as retinol and topical glycolic acid products and antioxidants can all be very beneficial as soon as you start to see the most subtle signs of aging: fine lines, uneven pigmentation and blotchy skin.
Thanks to Dr. Bowe for all of her amazing advice! Will YOU use these great tips about safe tanning and skin care? Let us know, HollywoodLifers!
