Due to an error with ABC New’s Twitter app, Neil Armstrong started trending Aug. 27 because of a tweet that was mistakenly sent out. The tweet said “Neil Armstrong, First Man on the Moon, Is Dead.” However, legendary astronaut died on Aug. 25, 2012. Many reports online claim it was a hoax, but really, it was just a mistake.

They tweeted the link of an article about his passing to commemorate the anniversary of his death, which was originally written on the day he died, but included a more current video. The update accidentally changed the timestamp on their mobile site, so when others saw and shared the story, it looked like it was a new story that was published on Aug. 27, 2013. Whoops!
Neil Armstrong Passed On Aug. 25 2012, Putting Rumors To Rest
Neil Armstrong actually passed away Aug. 25, 2012 after undergoing heart surgery earlier that month.
Following the accidental tweet, fans, bloggers and news outlets reacted strongly on Twitter.
@corybe tweeted, “The mobile version of the Neil Armstrong obit is dated today, FYI,” while @drblogstein tweeted, “Crazy that Neil Armstrong would die on the first anniversary of his death.”
@Wolfrum wrote, “Neil Armstrong dies once a year now. It’s a space-time thing.”
It appears ABC News has since deleted the tweet.
Neil was on the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. When he landed, Neil told everyone on Earth, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
