Victoria, 17, was responsible for the biggest upset of the U.S. Open on Aug. 27, when she beat out former 2011 champion Samantha Stosur, in her first Grand Slam win.
Victoria Duval is now a household name. The 17-year-old American, who was ranked 296, beat out Samantha Stosur at the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Aug. 27, at the U.S. Open and she couldn’t have been more humble about it!
Victoria, who is being called the “girl with the tiny voice” played her best match of tennis ever, and now she will advance. Victoria had received a wild car to play at the U.S. Open, after winning last year’s USTA 18-and-under girls championship.
“It was a big moment, big stage, not easy closing any match out, let alone a past U.S. Open champion,” she said of her big win. “I don’t even remember match point,” she added. “I guess I was really happy. I mean, you could tell by all the jumping I did.”
Victoria did an interview on the court after her win and won over the tennis-goers with her high-pitched voice that reminds you just how young she is.
“There’s a lot to be thankful for,” she said. “I don’t take anything for granted.”
She also spoke about how her mentor, tennis legend Billie Jean King, who has won 39 Grand Slams, texted her after her big win. But one person she wasn’t expecting a shout out from was rapper Lil Wayne, who she said messaged her on Twitter.
“I’m going to go hit that up,” she said. “Maybe I have to create one [a Twitter account] and be like @weezythankyou.”
Victoria had 35 unforced errors: 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
