Amanda waited anxiously on March 25 to hear whether she would face trial again for the murder of 21-year-old British student Meredith Kercher, and Italy’s highest court ruled to retry the American and her Italian ex-boyfriend.
Amanda Knox, 25, and her Italian ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 29, were acquitted of murdering Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old British student in 2011 after serving a four-year prison sentence. But Italy’s highest court ruled on March 26 that the murder case must be re-tried in an appeals court in Florence, Italy in the 2007 murder of Amanda’s former roommate.
Amanda said it was “painful” to hear the news of the retrial.
Amanda Knox Statement About Retrial
In a statement responding to the decision to retry the case, the 25-year-old said that her alleged involvement in the murder was ”completely unfounded and unfair.”
“The prosecution responsible for the many discrepancies in their work must be made to answer for them, for Raffaele’s sake, my sake and most especially for the sake of Meredith’s family. Our hearts go out to them,” Amanda continued in her statement.
“No matter what happens, my family and I will face this continuing legal battle as we always have, confident in the truth and with our heads held high in the face of wrongful accusations and unreasonable adversity," she added.
Amanda Knox & Raffaele Convicted Of Meredith Kercher’s 2007 Murder
Amanda and Raffaele were arrested in 2007, shortly after Meredith’s body was found in a pool of blood, with her throat slashed, in her bedroom in the apartment she shared with Amanda and other in the University town of Perugia, where they were exchange students.
Amanda and Raffaele were initially convicted — Knox got 26 years in prison and Sollecito got 25 — but in 2011, the appeals court acquitted them. The appellate court claimed that the murder weapon was never found, the DNA tests were faulty and Amanda and Raffaele had no motive to kill Meredith.
After almost four years behind bars, Amanda returned to her hometown of Seattle, Washington.
Now, she is facing a retrial with her ex-boyfriend after their acquittal was overturned.
