Famous Hollywood stars are voicing their support for the gay community on Twitter as the Supreme Court hears two cases that will forever change the landscape of gay rights in the United States.
The Supreme Court is hearing two monumental cases this week, on March 26 and 27, regarding the Defense Of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8, which have both been the source of much debate among Hollywood as well as the rest of the country. Some of our favorite stars are tweeting about marriage equality — see what they’re saying!
Celebrities For Marriage Equality
Amber Benson: The Dark Ages ended a long time ago, folks. Marriage Equality now!
Damon Lindelof: If you’re against marriage equality, please unfollow me. You can hate LOST all you want, but you can’t hate love.
Sophia Bush: Marriage was established outside of religion first, actually. So what “tradition” are we really speaking of? #research #equality.
Maria Shriver: Big day for love. Big day for marriage equality. I do believe that everyone deserves to say “I do” to whomever they choose. Yes, I do.
Alex Newell: Why shouldn’t we be able to show our love to the world by getting married?!!
Harry Shum, Jr.: Geez, is this still a debate?! Let the gays marry.
Sara Bareilles: Yes yes yes. It is time. Today #Prop8 has its day in front of the Supreme Court. My whole hearted support for #MarriageEquality!
Christina Perri: marriage equality please.
Rodiney Santiago: Marriage Equality for everyone! Change is happening – very exciting time. ALL TRUE LOVE IS EQUAL.
Ryan Murphy: A very exciting day. #federalequality
With these two cases, the court is considering the constitutionality of Proposition 8, passed by the citizens of California in 2008; and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), passed by the House (342-67) and Senate (85-14) and signed by President Clinton in 1996. A decision will be made in June 2013.
What Are DOMA and Prop 8?
DOMA defines marriage as the legal union of one man and one woman for federal and inter-state recognition purposes in the United States. And Prop 8, passed in the Nov. 2008 election, added a new provision to the California Constitution, which provides that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”
What do YOU think, HollywoodLifers? Should gay marriage be legal in all 50 states? Should the court overturn Prop 8?
