North Dakota governor Jack Dalrymple made a historical pro-life decision on March 26 when he signed a strict abortion ban into law, which would women from having abortions as early as six weeks pregnant.
The law approves three bills, one of which is the most controversial — it bans abortions once the fetus’ heartbeat is “detectable,” according to the New York Times. A heartbeat can be heard as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, which many pro-choice activists argue could entail that abortion will be completely banned. Many women don’t realize they are pregnant until they are six weeks along or later.
The law also prevents women from getting abortions for fetal genetic abnormalities.
North Dakota’s Abortion Ban Met With Opposition
Gov. Dalrymple’s controversial law was met with intense criticism by pro-choice activists, especially in the state, which already has strict abortion laws. Red River Women’s Clinic is the only institution in the state the provides abotion.
"In the past it's been, 'We're going to try and make it more difficult, more hoops, more obstacles for women to have to jump through or jump over,’" Tammi Kromenaker, director of Red River Women's Clinic, told the New York Times. "But this is specifically, 'Let's ban abortion. Let's do it. Let's challenge Roe v. Wade. Let's end abortion in North Dakota.’"
