After the success of 2011′s ‘Horrible Bosses,’ Jennifer and Jason are teaming up again for another shot at comedy gold — but did they hit the mark?
We’re the Millers is a raunchy comedy about a group of outcasts who must fake being a perfect, white-picket-fence family in order smuggle a massive load of pot south of the border to settle a debt. (You know, normal family stuff.) Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, and Will Poulter star as the “Millers,” and it looks like the wild adventure that ensues with this phony family is sure to bring on the laughs — at least, according to some critics.

Before it fizzles out with a predictably redemptive ending, Millers serves up some delightfully lewd laughs, such as Roberts teaching her ”brother” how to kiss as ”Mom” and ”Dad” cheer her on. While Aniston shows that she’s as deft on a stripper pole as she is with her sitcom-honed timing, Sudeikis wields his smart-ass sarcasm like a barbed weapon. And more often than not, it kills.

But what really drives the movie is its own search for something to make fun of, and for a comic style that can feel credibly naughty while remaining ultimately safe and affirmative.

Once you get over the fact that few world-weary exotic dancers would ever possess—or afford—such a healthy Malibu Barbie glow, the actress settles in quite nicely into a role that fits her like a custom G-string. As a comedy couple, she and Sudeikis aren’t exactly Cheech and Chong, but their well-matched timing and clashing attitudes often create comic sparks that erupt into laughter.

We’re the Millers is vulgar vanilla, a “family” comedy about a bunch of would-be golly-gee squares who talk dirty and get involved with Mexican drug dealers because it’s 2013 instead of 1953. An inane little time-killer with enough low laughs to placate undemanding audiences, this Warner Bros. release could rake in some decent quick returns and good ancillary results if at least part of the public that made The Heat such a hit becomes convinced that this is just the R-rated romp it needs to bookend the summer with another shot of crude comedy.
