Prosecutors said in a hearing on April 1 that the only justice for James is death.
James Holmes‘ defense team would like to have their client in jail for the rest of his life without parole, but the prosecution has other plans. The Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler said they will seek the death penalty for James’ mass shooting in July of 2012 in Aurora, Colorado.
James Holmes’ Prosecutors Seeking The Death Penalty
James will go to trial in August but during his hearing on April 1, the DA rejected his defense bid.
“In this case, for James Egan Holmes, justice is death,” George said.
James’ attorney’s say: “Mr. Holmes is currently willing to resolve the case to bring the proceedings to a speedy and definite conclusion for all involved.”
They reportedly want to say that their client was insane at the time of the mass shooting. James sat in court and showed no emotion. His parents were there and also many family members of the victims. You could reportedly hear them cry out during the hearing.
ABC News is reporting that various family members are split on whether James should get the death penalty. After such a horrific tragedy, do you think that James should get the death penalty? His defense team thinks that he should spend the rest of his life in jail.
But the prosecutors believe that James’ defense team is seeking life in prison as a publicity stunt: ”The circumstances surrounding the filing of the Notice indicate that it was filed for the intended purpose of generating the predictable pretrial publicity.”
