A flock of fellas are coming for Lady Mary. It’s like a 19th-century ‘Bachelorette!’
Matthew who? When Downton Abbey returns for its fourth season Jan. 5, a newly widowed Mary (Michelle Dockery) will have her hands full with a bevy of potential new suitors. “There's a character called Blake, played by Julian Ovenden,” Michelle tells HollywoodLife.com‘s sister site TVLine. ”And Evelyn Napier (played by Brendan Patricks) comes back, as well. He was the one who brought the Turkish diplomat along. That was lovely to play scenes with Brendan again because we haven't seen him since season one.
Of course, there’s one suitor — Gillingham, played by Tom Cullen – that appears to be leading the pack.
“Gillingham is an old family friend,” Michelle explains. “The sisters knew him when we were growing up, and we haven't seen him since then. A party is organized at the house, and he is invited to it. He's just a different character.”
Michelle Dockery Talks Major ‘Change’ In Season 4
Though fans will undoubtedly feel the absence of Matthew (Dan Stevens), Michelle insists that good things are coming in season four. In fact, losing Matthew might be exactly what Downton Abbey needed to shake things up again. She says:
[Mary's] beginning to come back to real life again because it takes her a long, long time to even interact with anyone. There's a real energy about [season] four. It's very much the '20s. It's very much the bright, young things. Rose, the cousin, and Edith very much represent this new wave of fashion, of dining in restaurants with a man, without being accompanied. There's a real shift in the periods, more so than [season] three. I thought [season] three was very much the '20s, but it's moved even further on. It feels closer to where we are today. It's a bit more modern. That's what will be appealing about [season] four. There's a sense of change, again.
Dining “without being accompanied?” Those Downton girls really are a racy bunch, aren’t they?
HollywoodLifers, what do you think of Mary’s suitor parade? Are you excited to watch her find love again, or are you still too bitter about losing Matthew? Drop a comment with your thoughts!
